The rest of the scale insects shown on that website do not match the photo at least.

cheers, MarkM Lawlorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00955756227234970302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5666457738678091444.post-78436630892258146662013-04-03T12:27:44.578+01:002013-04-03T12:27:44.578+01:00Hi Mark, I think Soft Brown Scale is a fairly safe...Hi Mark, I think Soft Brown Scale is a fairly safe tick, mine were originally identified from pictures in 2010:-

http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/forums/insects-and-invertebrates/96456-scale-insect.html

The guy who identified them now has this website which may be of interest to fellow 1sqK'rs:-

http://www.bnhs.co.uk/focuson/scales/html/

Eventually they will probably turn out to be a species aggregate, but until then..

Regards,
Matt
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05461922953389188911noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5666457738678091444.post-689835689653039462013-03-30T13:05:57.688+00:002013-03-30T13:05:57.688+00:00Glad that it is a tricky ID problem as I did find ...Glad that it is a tricky ID problem as I did find it very tricky.

My main difficulty was in misunderstanding a feature in the key. It said "Antennae with one to three pale basal segments..." which I thought meant segments 1, 2 and 3 were all paler. The specimen was dark and had just the first segment paler.

That's a superb guide to the group Mark, nice one.M Lawlorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00955756227234970302noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5666457738678091444.post-59575651129341625302013-03-30T11:49:40.986+00:002013-03-30T11:49:40.986+00:00Amara identification has reduced many people to te...Amara identification has reduced many people to tears Mark. In fact, the generic name is believed to derive from the Latin for bitter, describing the typical emotion of someone attempting to identify one!
I have tried to sweeten the experience here:
http://markgtelfer.co.uk/2012/03/09/sunshiners-moonshiners-and-stem-climbers/Mark G.
