Secondly I hope that a few more people will give the challenge a go next year. Its not about topping the table (ask a Rochdale fan - longest non-winning streak in the football league, 107 years and counting!) but it really does challenge you to look harder and to try and understand more about wildlife. This year I added 522 species to my total UK Pan Species List of which 94 came from this square. (that is, nearly a fifth of all my total UK lifers for the year came from one very ordinary 1km square - amazing!)
Finally I plan to continue with this square, which is near where I work, next year. I also plan to do a different square nearer to where I live but plan to post details about that square later.
Happy New Year to all who took part

Bravo Pete, and you were adamant of not managing 500, as I recall. Great work already. Nearly a quarter of everything I saw in my square was a lifer for me, I'm anticipating a similar scene for 2018 too. You're absolutely right, this Challenge really does make you look harder at what's around you. I can't envision a single square kilometre in all of Britain which doesn't harbour at least three hundred species, so everybody who's been following this should consider getting out there and seeing what they can find in their own home square.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with your 2018 targets, Pete. There are some hefty jumps in there! I'm thinking Tawny Owl may be a strong contender for pole position on the 2018 list for me.
Clock is ticking, I've already told the bosses I won't be available for work on 1st January. Happy New Year and square-bashing to everyone! :)
Well done Pete. BTW it’s much easier second time round
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff, have really enjoyed following everyone's progress and am looking forward to seeing how 2018 pans out. By the way, I've just totted up my all-years (mostly 2013 onwards) 1-ksq list for TM2499 and it's now on 2,005 species. 3K may be somewhat beyond me (would rather move house first I think!) but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteNonsense, I bet you've hardly even started with nematodes and freshwater protists - loads of mileage left in your square (and your abilities) yet! ;)
