Yeovil end July update

Over half way!
Finished July on 528 species and will keep on trying to add more over the coming months but 1000 is looking very unlikely.
Plants 214, Bryophytes 3, Fungi 8, Lichens 14, Annelids 3, Crustacea 2, Spiders 10, Mollusc 9, Myriapods 2, Diptera 23, Hymenoptera 27, Coleoptera 24, Moths 75, Butterflies 17, Odonata 11,
Orthoptera 3, Other insects 3, Fish 1, Amphibia 3, Birds 56 & Mammals 8.

The number of moths recorded just from moths disturbed (or noted at rest) during the day is higher than I expected. Shame there is nowhere safe in the square to run a trap.

  1. Congrats :) Very jealous of your Odonata tally - our county list only runs to 12!

  2. Hi Pete, would the small church yard at Thorne Coffin be a possible 'safe' site to run a moth trap (with permission!!). I have a portable actinic you could use if needed & I would be interested to see the results. I live in the next 1km square to the East and regularly follow this blog. Let me know if interested.

    1. Hi Pete, Thanks for your reply - I should of said it was problems with getting permission rather than safety per se. I would very much like to try but unsure where to even begin to get permission?!

    2. There was a notice board outside the church which may provide a clue as to where to ask for permission?
I think your species total so far is very respectable in such an unpromising 1km square (I think I can call it that as a local resident!). I was planning on having a go in ST5317, so imagine my surprise when I saw you were doing it in the square immediately adjacent - quite a coincidence given there are over 240,000 1km squares in the UK!

    3. I will have a look today and see if its any use.

Also, as you say, it would have been very strange if you had done the adjacent square giving how few squares there are being done nationally!
Always worth a go next year?!
