Cullaloe, Fife - fungus Asaphomyces tubanticus new for Scotland
So the first (well, why not be optimistic?) "new for Scotland" species emerged last night under the lens. While wrestling with a Catops species (I reckon fuliginosus but not certain) I noticed its nether regions were somewhat decorated with one of my favourite groups of things in the natural world - the Laboulbeniomycetes
Turns out to be Asaphomyces tubanticus, which is pretty host specific, to genus at least. Ain't it pretty?

Nice one Ali - I see quite a few of these fungi on various beetles, but I'm afraid IDing them is above my pay grade...

ReplyDeleteThis is the third year 1ksq has produced new species for Scotland, plus a heap for the county. Our ignorance is seemingly endless :) I haven't achieved Seth's success of new to Britain yet, but we live in hope.
