Skye - The Biggest Day

So I did my second 24-hour PSL MegaBlitz of my square a couple of days back, you can read about it on my blog by clicking here

Upshot was that I held the Big Day a couple of days earlier than originally planned (in order to beat an incoming storm system) and managed just shy of 550 species on the day - I'm happy with that!

Ali wanted some numbers, so here you go buddy. Broken down into their respective PSL groups as per the website:

Algae - 15 (14 marine, 1 terrestrial, 0 freshwater - all dried up!)
Lichens - 32
Fungi - 35
Bryophytes - 27 (10 liverworts, 17 mosses)
Vascular Plants - 233
Sponges - 1
Cnidarians - 1 (an anemone)
Molluscs - 23 (2 Freshwater, 15 Terrestrial, 6 Marine)
Annelids - 6 (all marine)
Platyhelminths - 2 (1 freshwater, 1 terrestrial)
Arachnids - 11 (2 harvestmen, 4 mites, 5 spiders)
Myriapods - 6 (2 centipedes, 4 millipedes)
Crustaceans - 7 (3 terrestrial, 3 marine)
Springtails - 2
Bristletails - 1
Odonata - 2 (1 dragon, 1 damsel)
Orthopteroids - 1 (an earwig)
Hemipteroids - 8 (2 bugs, 3 aphids, 2 psyllids, 1 adelgid)
Hymenoptera - 4 (2 bees, 1 wasp, 1 sawfly)
Coleoptera - 8
Diptera - 27
Butterflies - 1
Moths - 31
Insects RSO - 3 (1 mayfly, 1 scorpionfly, 1 alderfly)
Fish - 6 (2 freshwater, 4 marine)
Birds - 51
Mammals - 4
Total - 548 species

That's a lot of species! But, as we can quite clearly see, once you actually break it down I did pretty awfully, apart from plants. Eight beetles! Two bugs!! Four hymenoptera!!! Truly shocking, I ought to scurry into a darkened corner and die a long, lonely death of shame.

Next time I'll just have to do it properly :)

  1. Already read (and commented) about this on your blog. Amazing and also useful to see here a breakdown by groups.

  2. Actually I wanted to see horrible tallies in areas we can do well at next weekend! It's nicely poised for a decent run at the 1k. Reminds me I need to print off that bryo list you sent me for the square. Excited to see how many species we can record with four of us over a weekend
